lyrics

She was beautiful once
You could read it between the lines on her face
Through those cracks in her ice
Catch a glimpse of the life she wished she had led
Any spark in her eyes
Now extinguished by the mistrust in her gaze
The result of a life
Whose details must remain absolutely unshared

These eyes don’t see me
Yet they seek me out
Aware defensive
Fearing contact

She was beautiful once
What a horrible thing to say about her
As if smiling and hope
Were solely to dwell in her past
We know the surface won’t show
Any hint of what might lie underneath
And a stranger’s gaze
Shouldn’t judge or define or construct anyone

Large crowds so easy
To be alone in
We watch instead of
Taking part in life

She was beautiful once
The words can to my mind as my eyes found her face
As she sat by herself
Well away from the corner where I sat and I watched
Her stop came she left
And my fantasy followed her out of the car
Leaving me on my own
In hope that a stranger would now try to define me
